Still Life of Basic Shapes

Throughout the year 7th grade students kept asking me how they could draw better.  Since many of them had not had art class in a few years, I figured it would be a good time to introduce and review some basic drawing skills and techniques.

For this mini-assignment, students had 2 class periods to complete this still life of basic shapes.  We talked about value and shading as well as hatching and cross-hatching. We looked carefully at our light source and students tried to recreate these arrangements of basic shapes.

While it wasnt the most exciting subject matter, students enjoyed the process of capturing objects as realistically as possible.  Many were impressed at how well they did when they paid close attention to highlights and shadows.
